CategoryImage File
DescriptionJPG is the file format for images made by digital cameras and spread throughout the world wide web. Saving in JPG format an image loses its quality, because of the size compression. But at the end you have a much smaller file easy to archive, send, and publish in the web. These are the cases when an image's size matters more than image's quality. Nonetheless, by using professional software you can select the compression degree and so affect the image's quality.

MDI to JPG Converter — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

MDI (Microsoft Document Imaging) is a proprietary raster image format created by Microsoft. It was bundled with Microsoft Office 2003 through 2007 as part of the Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MODI) application — used primarily for storing scanned documents as multi-page image files. Microsoft discontinued MODI in Office 2010 and removed MDI support from later Windows versions, leaving many archived scanned documents stranded in a format that modern software cannot open natively.
MDI uses a proprietary Microsoft Tagged Image File (MTIFF) variant with a custom compression scheme. Since Office 2010, no Microsoft product opens MDI natively. The file extension is not registered by default in Windows 7 or later. Third-party image viewers (IrfanView, XnView) added MDI support over the years, but coverage is inconsistent. Converting to JPG solves the compatibility problem permanently — JPG opens on every device and platform without any special software.
Yes. MDI is a multi-page format, similar to multi-page TIFF. Each page in the MDI archive becomes a separate JPG file in the output. The files are typically named with page numbers (page_001.jpg, page_002.jpg, etc.). If you only need one specific page, download the desired file from the output set. For multi-page documents that should stay together, consider converting to PDF instead of JPG.
The converter renders MDI pages at standard JPEG quality, typically equivalent to quality 85–90 in a 0–100 scale. MDI files store scanned images at the resolution they were scanned — typically 150, 200, or 300 DPI. The output JPG preserves this resolution. For documents scanned in black-and-white, the JPG may appear as grayscale. For color scans, the output is 24-bit color JPG.
The online converter accepts MDI files up to 50 MB. MDI files from MODI-era Office typically range from a few KB per page (fax-quality 200 DPI black and white) to 1–3 MB per page (300 DPI grayscale scans). A 50-page scanned document at 300 DPI can be 30–50 MB. For larger archives, split the MDI into smaller sections if possible, or use the desktop Total Image Converter, which handles files of any size.
The online tool converts one file at a time. For bulk conversion of archived MDI collections — a common task when migrating legacy document archives from Office 2003 systems — use the desktop Total Image Converter: TotalImageConverter.exe C:\MDI\*.mdi /jpg /out C:\JPG\. Add /dpi 300 to enforce consistent output resolution and /subfolders to process nested folder hierarchies. A personal license starts at $49.90 with a 30-day free trial.
