Why can't I open my XPS file in Windows 10 or Windows 11?

Microsoft removed the XPS Viewer from Windows 10 (build 1803 and later) as a default component. It is still available as an optional feature under Settings > Apps > Optional features, but it is not installed automatically. On Windows 11, the XPS Viewer is also absent by default. Converting to PDF is faster than reinstalling the optional viewer and produces a file that opens everywhere.

What is the difference between XPS and OXPS?

XPS (XML Paper Specification) is the original Microsoft format introduced with Windows Vista. OXPS is the variant standardized by ECMA International as ECMA-388. Both formats contain the same type of content — XML page descriptions, embedded fonts, and images — and the converter handles both. If your file has a .oxps extension, it is processed identically to .xps.
