File extension .MKV
CategoryVideo File
DescriptionMKV is not a multimedia compression format, but rather a container format, which incorporates various types of multimedia. Mostly, such files contain audio, video, textual information (subtitles), etc. ñ elements, which may use completely different encoding patterns. MKVís biggest advantages are easy online sharing, low error rate, dissection of files into separate chapters, switchable subtitles, switchable audio- and video tracks, etc. Mostly, MKVs consist of open source elements, and they can be played in a vast number of players on nearly all existing platforms.

MKV to PDF Converter — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

No. The PDF contains still images (frames) extracted from the MKV video, not the video itself. The converter samples the video at a chosen interval (e.g., one frame every 2 seconds) and places those images into a paginated PDF — either as a contact sheet grid or one frame per page. The result is a printable storyboard anyone can open without a video player.
MKV (Matroska Video) is a flexible container format, not a codec. The same .mkv extension can wrap H.264, H.265/HEVC, AV1, VP9, or even older codecs like DivX. Tools that don't have the right codec installed or don't support the specific codec variant will fail to open the file. If the converter reports an unrecognized file, remux or re-encode the MKV to H.264 in a tool like HandBrake, then retry.
HDR (High Dynamic Range) footage has a much wider luminance range than standard monitors or printed pages can display. The converter tone-maps HDR frames to standard dynamic range (SDR) automatically. Bright highlights are compressed and deep shadows are lifted slightly. The frames will look viewable and printable, but they won't match the original HDR display experience — this is expected and unavoidable for any static export.
Soft subtitles stored inside the MKV (SRT, ASS/SSA, PGS tracks) are metadata streams — they are not burned into the video pixels and therefore do not appear in extracted frames. To include captions in your PDF, use a tool like HandBrake or FFmpeg to burn the subtitle track into the video before uploading: ffmpeg -i input.mkv -vf subtitles=input.mkv output_burned.mkv. Then convert that burned version.
The online converter accepts MKV files up to 50 MB. A 50 MB MKV is typically a 2–5 minute clip at moderate bitrate, which produces a manageable PDF. Full feature films or long recordings are far larger — for those, either trim the clip to the section you need, increase the frame sampling interval to reduce the number of extracted frames, or use CoolUtils desktop tools which have no file size limit.
The online converter handles one file at a time. For batch workflows — security footage reviews, daily video logs, QA recordings — use CoolUtils desktop tools from the command line. Specify the input folder, sampling interval, layout (grid or single-frame), and output path. The desktop version runs as a scheduled task or within a pipeline script on Windows 7–11 with no user interface needed.
