What is a DWFX file and why is PDF better for sharing engineering drawings?

DWFX (Design Web Format XPS) is Autodesk's publish-only format for distributing CAD drawings. It is based on Microsoft XPS and requires Autodesk Design Review or the Windows XPS viewer — software that most clients, contractors, and procurement teams don't have. PDF is readable on every device with Adobe Reader, browser PDF viewers, and mobile apps. Converting DWFX to PDF removes the software dependency while preserving vector sharpness, so drawings print crisply at any size.

Is the PDF output a vector document or a raster image?

The converter produces a vector PDF where possible. Lines, arcs, polylines, and text from the DWFX geometry are rendered as vector paths in the PDF, so the drawing remains sharp at any zoom level and prints cleanly at large plot sizes (A0, A1). Raster images embedded in the DWFX (scanned photos, bitmap logos) remain as raster regions within the otherwise-vector PDF.

Are drawing layers preserved in the PDF?

The PDF reflects the layer visibility state set at the time the DWFX was published. Visible layers are included; frozen or hidden layers that were excluded at publish time are not present in the DWFX and cannot be recovered. If you need a PDF with selectable layer control (PDF Optional Content Groups), use the desktop Total CAD Converter which can produce layered PDFs from source DWG/DWFX files.

Can the PDF be searched or is the text just pixels?

Text in the DWFX drawing — annotations, dimension text, title block content — is converted to selectable text in the PDF. This means you can search for a part number, copy a note, or have the PDF indexed by a document management system. Fonts embedded in the DWFX are substituted with standard PDF fonts when necessary.

What is the file size limit for the online converter?

The online converter accepts DWFX files up to 50 MB. Single-sheet drawings are typically 200 KB–3 MB. Complex multi-sheet packages with embedded raster content can be 10–40 MB. For files above 50 MB or for batch conversion of an entire drawing archive, use the desktop Total CAD Converter: TotalCADConverter.exe C:\Drawings\*.dwfx /pdf /out C:\PDF\. It runs on Windows 7–11 with no file size restriction.

How does DWFX to PDF compare to re-publishing the original DWG to PDF?

If you have the original DWG source file, publishing directly to PDF from AutoCAD or the Total CAD Converter is always the preferred route — it gives you the most accurate PDF with proper fonts, line weights, and plot styles. DWFX to PDF is the practical option when the original DWG is unavailable, you received the DWFX from a contractor, or you need a quick PDF of a drawing you can view but cannot edit. The results are good but may not perfectly reproduce custom plot-style colour settings from the original CAD file.

Can Windows open a DWFX file without any Autodesk software?

Sometimes — DWFX is built on Microsoft's XPS format, so the legacy XPS Viewer can render simple single-sheet files (on Windows 10/11 it is an optional feature). Multi-sheet drawing sets, custom line styles, and measurement tools need Autodesk Design Review — or skip both viewers and convert to PDF, which opens everywhere.

Why did I receive a DWFX instead of the DWG?

Because DWFX is the publish format: it shares the drawing while protecting the editable source. Contractors and consultants send DWFX precisely so the geometry cannot be modified. If you only need to view, print, or archive, converting to PDF is the right move; if you need to edit, you must request the original DWG from the author.

Does the converted PDF keep the original sheet size and scale?

Yes — sheets keep the page size they were published at (A1, A0, Arch D), so a 1:100 drawing prints at 1:100 when the PDF is printed at 100% size. If a print comes out off-scale, check the printer dialog: 'fit to page' shrinking is what usually breaks scale, not the conversion.
