MHTML File

File extension .MHTML
CategoryDocument File
DescriptionMHTML stands for MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) HTML, which is a web page archive format that combines HTML code, images, and other multimedia elements into a single file. The MHTML format is used to save and share web pages, as well as to ensure that the content of the page remains the same even if the original source is no longer available.

The MHTML format works by creating a single file that contains all of the content of a web page, including text, images, and any other embedded media, such as videos or audio files. This file can then be opened in any web browser that supports MHTML, which includes most modern browsers.

MHTML files are typically used for archiving web pages or for saving copies of important online content. They are also useful for sharing web pages with others, as the MHTML file contains all of the necessary elements of the page and can be easily opened and viewed in any web browser.

To create an MHTML file, simply open the web page you wish to save, and select "Save As" from the file menu. From the save dialog, choose "Web Archive" or "MHTML" as the file type, and select a location to save the file.

Overall, the MHTML format is a useful tool for anyone who needs to save or share web pages, as it ensures that the content of the page remains intact and can be easily viewed in any web browser.

MHTML to PDF Converter — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

Upload your .mhtml or .mht file to the CoolUtils converter and click Download. The converter decodes the MIME multipart structure, extracts the HTML content and embedded resources, renders the page, and exports a PDF that captures the page as it appeared when saved. Files up to 50 MB, no signup required.
Both .mhtml and .mht refer to the same file format — MIME Encapsulation of Aggregate HTML Documents (RFC 2557). .mht is the older 3-character extension used by Internet Explorer; .mhtml is the longer version used by more recent implementations. The file contents and structure are identical. The converter accepts both extensions.
Google removed native MHTML support from Chrome in older versions, and Firefox never supported opening .mhtml files directly. Modern Chrome (version 40+) supports opening .mhtml files locally, but support varies by platform and file source. Microsoft Edge (the modern Chromium version) can open MHTML files, but other browsers cannot. Converting to PDF solves the compatibility issue permanently — PDF opens in every browser.
The PDF captures the page content as it was rendered when saved. Static content — text, images, tables, layout — transfers accurately. Dynamic content that depends on live data (JavaScript-rendered tables, interactive maps, real-time data feeds) was frozen at the time of saving, so the PDF reflects that frozen state. Animated elements are captured as static images.
Yes. Both .mht files from Internet Explorer and .mhtml files from legacy Edge (pre-Chromium) are fully supported. These are the most common sources of MHTML files in corporate environments, and the converter handles them correctly including embedded images, CSS styling, and standard web fonts.
The online converter processes one file at a time. For batch conversion of a legacy MHTML archive — for example, converting years of saved web reports or intranet snapshots to PDF for a document management system — use the desktop Total Doc Converter. It processes entire folders in a single run and supports command-line execution for automated conversion pipelines.
The online converter supports files up to 50 MB. MHTML files can be large because they embed all page images and resources in base64 encoding within the single file. A web page with many images can produce an MHTML file several times the size of the original HTML. For MHTML archives exceeding 50 MB, use the desktop Total Doc Converter, which has no file size limit.

Convert MHTML to PDF Online — Web Archive to Portable Document

MHTML (MIME HTML, also called MHT) is the web archive format used by Internet Explorer, older Edge versions, and Windows web applications to save a complete web page — HTML markup, CSS styles, images, and scripts — in a single file. The format has a significant problem: modern browsers have dropped support for opening .mhtml files directly, and non-Windows users have no native viewer at all. Converting MHTML to PDF produces a rendered, fixed-layout document that opens on any device without browser compatibility issues. The PDF captures the page exactly as it appeared when saved — content, images, and formatting intact.

What Is an MHTML File?

MHTML (MIME Encapsulation of Aggregate HTML Documents) is a web archive format defined in RFC 2557. It bundles an HTML page and all its referenced resources — images, stylesheets, scripts, and embedded fonts — into a single file using MIME multipart encoding. The file extension is .mhtml or .mht (both refer to the same format).

Batch MHTML to PDF Conversion via Command Line

Total Doc Converter processes entire folders of MHTML files from the command line — useful for migrating web archives or converting a library of saved reports:

docconverter.exe /S "C:\WebArchives\*.mhtml" /F PDF /O "C:\PDF-Output"

Use *.mht for MHT files or *.mhtml for the longer extension — both are supported. Integrate into a batch job to systematically convert a legacy archive of MHTML documents to PDF for document management system ingestion, or run on a schedule to convert newly generated MHTML reports from a web application automatically.
