RTF to PDF Converter — FAQ ▼

RTF (Rich Text Format) is a document interchange format developed by Microsoft in 1987. Unlike proprietary .doc or .docx formats, RTF uses only ASCII characters to encode text and formatting instructions, making it readable by virtually every word processor across all platforms — Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, WordPad, Apple Pages, and Google Docs all support RTF natively. RTF stores fonts, paragraph styles, tables, bullet lists, and embedded images.
PDF preserves the exact layout, fonts, and formatting of an RTF document regardless of the recipient's software or operating system. RTF files may render differently in different word processors — font substitution, margin variations, and line-break differences can distort the layout. Converting to PDF freezes the visual output, making it suitable for contracts, reports, CVs, and any document where consistent appearance is required.
Yes, provided the fonts used in the RTF file are available on the conversion server. Standard system fonts (Times New Roman, Arial, Courier, Georgia, etc.) are fully supported. Exotic or custom fonts that are embedded in the RTF file are also rendered. If a font is not available, a fallback font is substituted, which may alter spacing slightly.
The converter produces a true PDF with selectable, searchable text — not a scanned image. All text remains as vector characters in the output. This means you can highlight, copy, and search the PDF content in any PDF reader, and the document will remain accessible to screen readers.
Yes. Tables are rendered as PDF table structures with correct borders and cell padding. Inline images (JPEG, PNG, WMF, EMF objects embedded in RTF) are included in the PDF output at their original resolution. Floating text boxes and complex multi-column layouts are also supported.
RTF is an older plain-text interchange format that any text editor can open and parse. DOCX is a ZIP-compressed XML format that requires an application supporting the Office Open XML standard. RTF has lower fidelity for complex layouts but vastly better cross-application compatibility. DOCX supports more advanced features (SmartArt, advanced styles, tracked changes) but can only be fully rendered by Office-compatible software.
The online converter accepts RTF files up to 50 MB. Most RTF files are well under 1 MB of text content; the file size grows significantly only when images are embedded. RTF files with many high-resolution embedded images may be close to or exceed the 50 MB limit — in that case, CoolUtils Total Doc Converter handles large files in batch without size constraints.

Convert RTF to PDF Online — Fix Your Document Layout for Every Recipient

An RTF file looks fine in the word processor that created it — but open it in a different application and fonts shift, margins drift, and tables reflow. Converting RTF to PDF locks the layout permanently. Every recipient sees exactly what you intended: the same fonts, same spacing, same tables, same page breaks — on Windows, Mac, Android, or any other system. Drop your .rtf file and download a standards-compliant PDF in seconds. No Word license required.

What Is an RTF File?

RTF (Rich Text Format) is a document interchange format created by Microsoft in 1987. Unlike the proprietary .doc or .docx binary formats, RTF encodes all text and formatting as ASCII characters — making it readable by virtually every word processor ever made. Word, LibreOffice, WordPad, Apple Pages, and Google Docs all support RTF natively without any conversion step.

How RTF to PDF Conversion Works

The converter parses the RTF markup stream, resolving font references, paragraph styles, table structures, and embedded image objects (JPEG, PNG, WMF, EMF). Text is laid out using the specified fonts — standard system fonts are included; custom fonts embedded in the RTF are also rendered. The typeset result is written as a vector PDF with selectable, searchable text. Tables render with correct borders and cell shading; images are embedded at their original resolution. The output is a standards-compliant PDF that any PDF reader can open.
