| Description | Designed by CompuServe even before JPG GIF file format displays indexed-color graphics. It is a simple illustration with maximum 256 colors. That is why it is great for the web, logos and icons also are saved in GIF format. There is one more reason for that: GIF preserves transparence. You can put an icon or a logo above another image, and the borders of the first one won’t be seen. Above all GIF supports animation, which is a widely spread technique among the designers. |

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) stores palette-limited images and frame-based animations in a browser-native format. PDF is the universal document standard — printable, archivable, and accepted by every document management system, court filing portal, and distribution platform. Converting GIF to PDF packages GIF images into a portable document: single GIF files become single-page PDFs; animated GIFs become multi-page PDFs with each animation frame as a separate page; multiple GIF files can be combined into a single PDF document. The result is print-ready, signable, and accepted everywhere documents are required.
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) was developed by CompuServe in 1987. It supports up to 256 colors per frame (8-bit palette), lossless LZW compression, and frame-based animation. GIF became the dominant web animation format in the 1990s and remains widely used for short animations and low-color graphics.
| Property | GIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Palette-limited raster image / animation | Universal document container |
| Colors | 256 per frame (8-bit palette) | Full color depth (24-bit RGB) |
| Animation | Frame-based looping animation | Static pages (each frame becomes a page) |
| Print compatibility | Not accepted by print workflows | Universal print standard |
| Document management | Not standard for document archival | ISO 32000 archival standard (PDF/A) |
| Best for | Web animations, low-color web graphics | Document distribution, print, archival |
The converter reads the GIF file structure, extracting each frame's palette, pixel data, and delay timing. For a single-frame GIF, the pixel data is decoded from LZW compression, converted from the 8-bit palette to a full 24-bit RGB grid, and placed into a PDF page at the specified output DPI. The PDF page size is set to match the GIF dimensions. For animated GIFs, each frame is processed separately and placed as an individual page in the PDF, preserving the frame sequence of the animation in page order. Multiple input GIF files are concatenated into a single multi-page PDF in upload order. The resulting PDF is a self-contained, print-ready, fully portable document compatible with every PDF viewer, print shop, and document management system.
