| Description | HEIF, which stands for High Efficiency Image Format, is a modern image format that offers several advantages over traditional formats such as JPEG. HEIF images are smaller in size while retaining high image quality, making them ideal for use on websites and mobile devices. Additionally, HEIF supports more advanced features such as High Dynamic Range (HDR) and 10-bit color depth, allowing for more vibrant and lifelike images. One of the key benefits of HEIF is its ability to store multiple images and even video within a single file. This is achieved through the use of a container format that can hold both images and metadata such as camera settings and GPS data. This makes it easier to manage and share collections of photos and videos. Another advantage of HEIF is its support for advanced compression techniques such as HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), which is used to compress video in 4K and higher resolutions. This means that HEIF can store high-quality video at a smaller file size than traditional formats. Despite its many advantages, HEIF is not yet widely adopted by all devices and software. However, with the growing popularity of mobile devices and the need for smaller image and video files, it is likely that HEIF will become more prevalent in the future. As such, it is worth considering using HEIF for your images and videos to future-proof your content and take advantage of its many benefits. |

Since iOS 11, iPhones shoot photos in HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) by default. The format saves space on your phone but causes problems everywhere else: Windows PCs, insurance portals, government websites, and most email clients cannot open .heic or .heif files without special plugins. Converting to PDF produces a universally viewable, printable document with no Apple hardware, iCloud account, or software installation required.
HEIF (ISO/IEC 23008-12) uses HEVC (H.265) video compression to store still images, achieving about 50% smaller file sizes than JPEG at equivalent quality. Apple adopted HEIF as the default in iOS 11 (2017) for iPhones 7 and later.
Windows 10 and 11 require the "HEIF Image Extensions" package from the Microsoft Store to open .heic files. Many enterprise systems (insurance portals, HR software, court filing systems, banking apps) never installed this extension, so HEIC files arrive as unreadable attachments. Converting to PDF bypasses the HEIC support problem entirely.
Both JPEG and PDF are universally supported, but PDF is the preferred format for document submissions:
| Property | HEIF / HEIC | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Photo storage on iPhone | Portable document exchange |
| Windows support | Requires Microsoft Store extension | Native (Edge, Adobe Reader, etc.) |
| macOS support | Native (macOS 10.13+) | Native (Preview) |
| Email attachment | Often blocked / unreadable | Universally accepted |
| Portal / form submission | Frequently rejected | Standard format |
| Printable from any device | Requires HEIC-capable viewer | Yes — any PDF viewer |
| Live Photo (video element) | Supported | Still image only |
Apple added automatic HEIC-to-JPEG conversion when sharing via AirDrop, Mail app, or iMessage to non-Apple devices (Settings → Camera → Formats → "Most Compatible" mode). However, this only works when photos are shared directly from the Photos app. When photos are transferred via USB cable, copied from iCloud Drive, or downloaded from iPhone backups, the .heic files arrive as-is — without any automatic conversion.
iPhone HDR photos and portraits with depth data are stored as HEIF with embedded auxiliary images (depth map, gain map for HDR). The converter renders the primary still image — the HDR or portrait photo — into the PDF. Auxiliary depth data is not included in the PDF output, as PDF does not support depth maps.
