What Is an EML File?

EML is the standard file format for a single email message. The format is defined by RFC 822 (1982), updated by RFC 2822 (2001) and RFC 5322 (2008). An EML is plain text on the outside, structured as:

• Headers block — key-value pairs (From, To, Cc, Subject, Date, Message-ID, Received, Content-Type, etc.) separated by a blank line from the body.
• Body — the message content, often as a MIME multipart structure: a plain-text version, an HTML version, inline images referenced by Content-ID, and attachments with base64-encoded payloads.

EML is what most modern email clients save when you drag a message out of the inbox or use File → Save As:

• Outlook Express and Windows Mail — native .eml format
• Mozilla Thunderbird — drag a message to the desktop = .eml
• Apple Mail — File → Save As = .eml (or .emlx, the Apple variant)
• Gmail — Show original → Download original = .eml
• Postbox, eM Client, The Bat!, Mailspring, Spark, Spike — all use .eml as the export format
• Microsoft Outlook — primarily uses the binary .msg format, but File → Save As → Text Only with .eml extension works

How the Conversion Works

1. Parse the RFC 5322 message. Read the header block, decode encoded-word headers (RFC 2047 for non-ASCII subjects), build a structured representation.
2. Walk the MIME tree. Identify the parts: multipart/alternative (text + HTML), multipart/related (HTML + inline images), multipart/mixed (body + attachments), individual leaves.
3. Decode bodies. Quoted-printable for HTML, base64 for binaries, then character-encode each text part using its declared charset.
4. Render the message. Layout the headers as a header block, render the HTML body (or wrap the plain-text body in a monospace block), embed inline images.
5. Embed attachments. Each attachment is added to the PDF as a file attachment, available in the Acrobat / Adobe Reader Attachments panel.
6. Write PDF. Standard PDF (ISO 32000) with embedded fonts and metadata mirroring the email's headers.

Common Issues and Fixes

• «Subject is garbled». The Subject header used a non-standard encoding (rare). Modern .eml files use RFC 2047 encoded-word format for non-ASCII subjects (e.g. =?UTF-8?B?...?=) and decode correctly. If your tool stripped this encoding, ask the sender to re-export.
• Inline images are missing. Some senders reference images by external URL (<img src="https://...">) instead of embedding them. The converter doesn't fetch external resources for security reasons. Ask the sender to embed inline images via Content-ID.
• Attachments are not embedded in the PDF. The .eml may have linked attachments hosted externally (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox links rather than MIME parts). The link works in the PDF, but the file itself isn't packaged.
• «This message is encrypted». S/MIME or PGP-encrypted bodies can't be decrypted by the converter. Open the .eml in your mail client with the right keys, save the decrypted version, then convert.
• Long emails get cut off. The free online converter handles standard email lengths. For threaded reply chains and multi-megabyte HTML emails, the desktop converter handles them without truncation.
